Virtual Historian - Places

It is impossible to understand history without understanding the places where history occurred. As we read historical texts we find ourselves constantly wanting to see a map of the locations that are being mentioned. We repeatedly turn back to the map on "page 167" to try and figure out where we are geographically in the narrative.

Maps

Virtual Historian takes "page 167" and puts it front and center. The maps are always visible in the program. One click on the mouse will load a map of where the location you are studying was received.

Clicking on different areas of the maps will "zoom in" on that area, providing maps with more detail.

Media Viewer

The Media Viewer offers a completely unique way to experience Church Historical sites. Virtual Reality Photographs allow you to turn 360 degrees around inside the photograph. Site plans show you the layout of the land and how the different photographs you view relate to each other in terms of their location. Visit every room in the Carthage Jail. Walk around the outside. Stand in the Martyrdom room and see the bullet hole that is still in the door.

Here is a small sampling of the locations included in Virtual Historian:

  • Sacred Grove
  • Harmony, Pennsylvania
  • Newel K. Whitney Store
  • Adam-ondi-Ahman
  • Nauvoo Temple (exterior only)
  • Kirtland Temple (exterior only)
  • Liberty Jail
  • Carthage Jail
Timeline

What can a timeline tell you about places? Each timeline event has been color-coded based on the location where the event occurred. This means that you can instantly see where events were happening without having to read the location on each event. This is especially useful when studying the Ohio period when there were many significant events happening between Ohio and Missouri.
